The Garden Park of Holly is proud to present The Hybridizers Showcase Daylily Garden.
The Hybridizer's Daylily Garden is uniquely designed to display an extensive collection of rare and unusual daylilies gathered from hybridizers across the country. These plants represent the work of many daylily htbridizers focused on changing the color, size, shape and adaptability of the daylily. The garden is arranged by hybridizer to more effectively demonstrate the work and direction of each grower. The largest section of the garden is dedicated to the daylilies developed by William Munson. Mr. Munson was responsible for many of the changes in the daylily that make them so popular and in such demand today. Mr. Munson is considered to have been one of the greatest daylily hybridizers.
The garden structure itself invites the visitor to stroll among the various cultivars. The entrance of the garden is sunken and is accesible by large boulder steps placed at each end. An Italian tiered fountain forms a floral focal point. The round central garden bed is banked by massive stones which are imitated again in the impressive wall of hand selected boulders providing structure and definition to the entire garden area.
Each plant is carefully marked with the name of the cultivar, the grower responsible for introducing it and the year of its introduction. The garden also contains numerous annuals, perennials and ornamental trees. Hostas, peonies and iris abound.
The number of noted hybridizers that area added to the garden increases each year, making this garden one of the most complete daylily collections to be found in the world. Visitors will see daylilies showcased from such hybridizers as: Anderson, Applegate, Apps, Benz, Branch, J. Carpenter, K. Carpenter, Castlebury, The Courturies, Crochet, Dickerson, The Doughertys, Elliot, Gates, Ra Hansen, Dan Hansen, Curt Hansen, Henry, Howard Hite, The Joiners, Martin Kamensky, Kinnebrew, Kirchhoff, Lambertson, Mason, Miles, Moldovan, Morrs, Munson, Pickles, Reckamp, Reed, Reinkes, Rice, Chris Salters, Sharp, Sikes, Soules, Stamile, Trimmer, and Webster.
Also on display is the Howard Hite Award Garden. This award is given each year to northern hybridizers or excellence in daylily development.
Two of the original gardeners who began the garden in 1998 continue the work today, Mary Coakley and Linda Boyd. Both ladies have worked diligently at procuring plants and developing a well thought out plan for plant arragement in the garden. Each year, weeks of weeding, spreading mulch, plant organizing, and enhancements are carried out by Mary and Linda that contribute to the appealing look and style of the garden.
