The Remembrance Garden was excavated in 1995 and planted in 1996 and 1997 by Master Gardeners Julia Williams and Theresa Morin.
The focal point of the entrance to the garden is a granite boulder with "Remembrance" inscribed on it and a pair of weeping larch trees framed by the columned entryway. The larch trees are also pleasingly visible from the verandah of the villa.
As one travels along the path left of the columns toward the waterfall, the wall gives way to a bank of limestone boulders planted with sedums and other rock plants. It is at this point that Remembrance Garden merges with Andrew's Club, the Arbored Rose Garden.
A wide range of perennials hardy to Southern Michigan growing area are being used in Remembrance Garden. They have been incorporated in a full compliment of planting environments including shade beds, a rock garden, full sun beds, water and bog sites, and naturalized areas of small spring bulbs. Michigan limestone has been used throughout.
Remembrance Garden provides a variety of pleasing backdrops for photographs of memorable occasions as well as an opportunity for a quiet, reflective stroll. During the winter months, the grasses and flower seed heads provide definition and interest against the white snow.
The name "Remembrance Garden" has different connotations. It is meant to evoke memories in those that walk along the path, of gardens they recall from their childhood; of flowers that remind them of family and friends that loved and tended the same flowers in their gardens. Remembrance Garden is also named in honor of all of the friends of Garden Park, who have contributed plantings from their own beds. Finally, the name "Remembrance Garden" has personal meaning to those that participated in its planting and design. This effort has truly been a labor of love and the time spent in this endeavor will always be a cherished memory of a very happy time.
